Here is a look at each of the 1A Girls Sectional Meets that took place on Thursday and Friday.

 

Friday

 

Fairfield Sectional

Results

 

Highlights –  Christopher High School won the sectional championship scoring 147 points. The meet had a 75 minute weather delay.  Leslie Drone (Hamilton County HS, McLeansboro) was the meet’s only double winner when she won the 3200 Meter Run (12:10.65) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:48.74). Paige Rodgers (Christopher HS) qualified for state in three events including winning the 300 Hurdles (46.88).

 

 

Lewistown Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Eureka qualified all four relays as well as in three individual events for next weekend’s state meet in winning the sectional team championship with 109 points. El Paso-Gridley (70 points) and Minonk Fieldcrest (62 points) finished second and third. Cassie Mundekis (Midwest Central HS, Manito) will be going for state championships in the 800 and the 400 next weekend. She won both races at this sectional. She cruised to the 800 title (2:19.82) by six seconds ahead of Abby Galusha (Williamsville HS). Mundekis came back to win the 400 Meter Dash (58.66) by a second ahead of Tessa Holland (Fieldcrest HS, Minonk).

 

Holland will be going after all-state performances next weekend as she qualified in three individual events. As well as qualifying in the 400, Holland won the Long Jump (17-5). She will be one of the favorites in the High Jump. She cleared 5-4 for the win on Friday. Erica Hibser won two races Friday putting her in position to do some big things next weekend. Hibser ran 11:21.62 to win the 3200 Meter Run by almost 50 seconds ahead of Delavan’s Abbey Green. Hibser completed her double winning the 1600 Meter Run (5:23.67) by six seconds ahead of Chelsea Pawlak (Deer-Creek Mackinaw HS). Pawlak will play a big part in her team’s 3200 Meter Relay. DCM ran 9:44.71 to win the event by six seconds ahead of Eureka and Minonk Fieldcrest. All three teams will be factors in the event next weekend. Kylie Davis (Eureka HS) won both the Shot Put (37-11 ½) and the Discus (131-0).

 

 

Lisle Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Could Aurora Christian find themselves among the top three teams after the last event next Saturday in Charleston? They put themselves in good position qualifying ten including all four relays to win this sectional with 96 points. Luther North could be in the mix also. They scored 89 points to finish second qualifying three relays and four individuals. Westmont was four points back in third place (85 points).

 

Natasha Brown (Aurora Christian HS) will be among the favorites in the sprints this weekend. She ran 25.63 to win the 200 Meter Dash. She was bested by Jada Williams (Luther North HS, Chicago) in the 100 Meter Dash as Williams ran 12.52 for the win. Brown finished second. Luther North could be dangerous in two of the sprint relays because of Williams this weekend. They ran 49.41 to win the 400 Meter Relay ahead of Aurora Christian (49.63). Luther North will be the favorite in the 800 Meter Relay as they ran 1:44.23 to win the sectional championship once again ahead of Aurora Christian (1:45.16).

 

Nichyria Byrd (Ogden International HS, Chicago) as she qualified in four individual events. She won the Long Jump (17-11 ½). She will be able to defend her 1A Triple Jump crown when she won in this sectional with a personal best 39-11 ½). Byrd also finished fourth in the 100 Meter Dash and third in the 200 Meter Dash. Annie Carlson (Westmont HS) also qualified in four events including two wins. Carlson won the 100 Hurdles (15.75) and then came back to win the 300 Hurdles (45.05). Carlson also qualified for state placing second in the Triple Jump and second in the 200 Meter Dash.

 

Isabella Wolke (Christian Liberty Academy, Arlington Heights) picked up two sectional titles winning the 3200 Meter Run (11.43.36) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:20.16). Her win in the 1600 was only by 52 hundredths ahead of Rebecca Wert (Aurora Christian HS). Wert earlier in the meet won the 800 Meter Run (2:23.47). Ariel Shumaker (Luther North HS, Chicago) was also a double qualifier winning the Shot Put (38-7 ½) and the Discus (113-3).

 

Manlius Bureau Valley Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Kewanee Wethersfield qualified ten including three relays for next week’s state meet in winning the team sectional title with 105 points. Host Bureau Valley scored 93 points to finish second. Karissa Roman will lead Wethersfield qualifying in multiple events. She cleared a season’s best 5-7 to win the High Jump. Roman also won the 300 Hurdles (46.96). Wethersfield will be tough in the 3200 Meter Relay. They ran 10:00.32 to roll to a nineteen second win ahead of Bureau Valley.

 

Regan Weidner (Bureau Valley HS, Manlius) won the 1600 Meter Run (5:29.19) edging Kirstie Ramsey (Wethersfield HS, Annawan) by eight tenths of a second. Earlier in the meet, Weidner was involved in a close 3200 Meter Run where the top three runners were within a second of each other. Jillian Monier (Henry-Senachwine HS) earned the win (11:52.96) by three seconds ahead of Weidner and Megan Grady (Amboy HS).

 

 

Nashville Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – A second place finish in the 1600 Meter Relay behind Belleville Althoff gave Chester the Sectional championship. They scored 107 ½ points to only win ahead of Althoff by 1 ½ points.  Sophie Keith (Pinckneyville HS) won two sectional championships in the 400 Meter Dash (58.38) and the 200 Meter Dash (26.41). Keri Burmester (Red Bud HS) also took home two sectional titles winning the 3200 Meter Run (11:21.95) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:21.55).

 

Newton Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Newton dominated the team competition in their own sectional scoring 155 points for the easy win. They qualified 12 to Charleston including all four relays. The individual spotlight was again in two time 1A cross country champion Anna Sophia Keller (St. Anthony HS, Effingham) as she won two events. Keller easily won the 3200 Meter Run (10:41.79) winning by more than a minute. The defending 1A 1600 champion came back and won that event with ease running 5:05.29 to win by 24 seconds ahead of Lexie Davidson (Newton HS).

 

McKendra Barthelme (Newton HS) won the Long Jump (17-1 ½). Later in the meet, she picked up two more wins taking the 100 Meter Hurdles (15.51) and the 300 Meter Hurdles (49.52). Bartheleme also qualified in the Triple Jump finishing third in that event.

 

 

Oregon Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Byron scored 109 points to win the sectional championship qualifying nine to next week’s state meet. The one athlete to keep an eye on from this sectional is Elgin Academy’s Kaitlyn Pearson in the sprints. She won both the 100 Meter Dash (12.59) and the 200 Meter Dash (26.03). She could be a factor in Charleston in both events. Valerie Richter (Harvest Christian Academy, Elgin) won two events running 2:21.62 to win the 800 Meter Run. She came back to run 5:32.86 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of teammate Nygia Pollard (5:46.36). Pollard earlier in the meet won the 3200 Meter Run. Freshman Emily Offenheiser (Stockton HS) was also a double winner capturing the Shot Put crown (42-2) as well as throwing 115-9 to win the Discus.

 

Seneca Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Host Seneca rolled up a whopping 194 points to easily win their own sectional. The Irish qualified three relays and thirteen individuals. Reed-Custer scored 74 points to finish second. Mariah Woods (Seton Academy HS, South Holland) will be one of the favorites in the sprints. She defeated Willow Stuedemann (Seneca HS) in both the 100 and 200. Woods ran 12.44 and 25.91 for the wins.

 

The distance events were great at this meet. Audrey Harrod (Hinckley Big-Rock HS) ran 2:19.66 to win the 800 Meter Run by eight seconds ahead of Paige Aurit (Marquette Academy, Ottawa). Harrod came back to finish second in the 400 behind Taylor Richie (Dwight HS). Daly Galloway (Dwight HS) will be the biggest threat to Anna Sophia Keller in the 3200 and 1600. Galloway ran a solo 11:08.97 to win the 3200 Meter Run lapping the field in the process. Galloway came back to run 5:04.81 to win the 1600 22 seconds ahead of Eva Bruno and Carina Collet (Seneca HS). Both Bruno and Collet will play a big part in Seneca’s success in the 3200 Meter Relay. The Irish ran 9:53.83 to win the sectional title.

 

Morgan Zacharias (Reed-Custer HS) is the defending 1A Pole Vault champion and will enter the meet as the big favorite in this event. She cleared a state leading 13-0 to win at this sectional. Zacharias also qualified in the 300 Hurdles.

 

 

Taylor Ridge Rockridge Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Mercer County scored 103 points to win the sectional championship. Megan Reed (Cambridge HS) won two events taking the Triple Jump (37-0) and the 400 Meter Dash (1:00.23). Kyla Bledsoe (ROWVA HS, Oneida) was also a double section champion winning the Shot Put (35-9 ½) and the Discus (108-8). Ryan Block (Knoxville HS) dominated the distance races winning the 3200 Meter Run (11:55.38) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:40.45).

 

 

Tolono Unity Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – St. Joseph-Ogden won the sectional team title scoring 108 points and qualifying ten to Charleston. The big story of the meet was the second place finish by Sidell Jamaica (94 points) and the four individual wins by Jenny Kimbro. The defending 1A champion in both the 100 and 300 Hurdles easily won those events. She ran 14.66 to win the 100 Hurdles by more than a second ahead of Cassie Meyer (Argenta Oreana HS). The winning margin in the 300 Hurdles was an incredible five seconds as she ran a season’s best 43.41 to win the race ahead of Elizabeth Bristow (St. Thomas More HS, Champaign). Kimbro won the Long Jump with a 17-0 effort. She finished her day winning the 200 Meter Dash (25.89).

 

 

Thursday

 

Gillespie Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Auburn qualified seven individuals and all four relays in winning the team championship with 140 points. Carlinville finished second with 98 points. Springfield Lutheran’s Jackie Eck was a double winner capturing the 800 Meter Run (2:24.77) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:33.91). Claire Meyer (Carrolton HS) swept the horizontal jumps winning the Long Jump (16-4 ½) and the Triple Jump (33-5). Rebecca Downs (Auburn HS) also won two events capturing the 400 Meter Dash (1:02.27) and the 200 Meter Dash (26.94). Katie Gonterman (Auburn) could be in contention for a state medal last week after she won the Shot Put (41-10 ½).

 

 

Heyworth Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Clifton Central won the team championship scoring 132 points. They qualified eleven to Charleston for next week’s state meet including three of their four relays. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley scored 112 points to finish second. Emery Podowicz (Clifton Central HS) was the meet’s only double individual event winner. She narrowly won the 100 Meter Hurdles by eleven hundredths of a second ahead of Kelsey Walker (LeRoy HS). The margin was only thirteen hundredths of a seconds when she won the 300 Hurdles in front of teammate Claire Peters (48.19-48.32).

 

 

Moweaqua Central A&M Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Decatur St. Teresa could be one of the teams vying for a state trophy next Saturday in Charleston. They won all four of the relays contested along with qualifying nine individuals to win the team championship with 118 points. Moweaqua Central A&M finished second with 107 points and also showed that they could be in contention for a top three finish. They qualified nine individuals and three relays to Thursday’s prelims in Charleston.

 

Sullivan finished third just one point ahead of Pana. They left Charleston last year with a trophy and could do so again this year even though they have only seven qualifiers. Amanda McClain was a double winner for Sullivan winning the Long Jump (17-11 ½) and the 400 Meter Dash (58.80). McClain finished second to teammate Emily Neuhauser in the 200 Meter Dash as the two were only separated by five hundredths of a second (25.69 – 25.74). Sullivan, the defending 800 Meter Relay, finished second in that event Thursday evening (1:48.33) behind the 1:47.90 winning time of Decatur St. Teresa.

 

KD Young (Warrensburg-Latham) is the national leader in the Shot Put. She will enter the 1A Meet next week as the favorite in both the Shot and the Discus after winning both in this meet. She had a 138-9 throw to win the Discus. Young also dominated the Shot Put (47-2 ½) winning by almost ten feet. The Brauer sisters dominated the two long distance events. Adrienne Brauer (PORTA HS, Petersburg) easily won the 3200 Meter Run (11:33.03) with almost a 32 second winning margin. Maria Brauer won the 1600 Meter Run (5:12.78) just ahead of her sister Adrienne (5:14.35).

 

 

Rushville Sectional

Results

 

Highlights – Carthage Illini West relied on their 1600 Meter Relay quartet to bring home the team championship. Illini West scored 100 points to edge Pleasant Plains by only five points. Both teams could be in the hunt for a trophy. Illini West qualified six individuals and three relays to the state meet. Their individuals could be in the mix for top finishes. Carly Garnett won the 3200 Meter Run (11:28.45) by almost a minute. She came back later in the meet to win the 1600 Meter Run (5:32.02). Mariah Brodie could also be a threat in the 800. She ran 2:21.15 to win that event Thursday night. Their 400, 800 and 1600 Meter Relays will be in contention for a top three finish.

 

 

Pleasant Plains qualified nine total including all four of their relays. Their best hope for a high individual finish could come from Hope Tewes in the High Jump. She cleared 5-2 to easily win the event in this sectional.
