2014 IHSA 1A Girls Sectional Recaps

Here is a look at highlights of each of the IHSA 1A Girls Sectional Meets that took place throughout Illinois on May 15-16, 2014.

 

Thursday May 15, 2014

 

Lawrenceville Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Newton qualifies 8 individuals and 1 relay in winning the sectional team crown with 109 points. Teutopolis was second with 79 points.

 

  • The story of the meet was the double win by Anna Sophia Keller (St. Anthony, Effingham). The freshman easily won the 3200 Meter Run (10:37.00) by almost two minutes. She came back to win the 1600 (5:08.31) by more than 34 seconds ahead of Marshall’s Sydney Davidson.

 

 

Manlius Bureau Valley Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Erie put themselves in good position for a trophy next week at Charleston. They qualified all four of their relays along with four individuals in placing second behind Kewanee Wethersfield who qualified 10 overall including 9 individuals.

 

  • Karissa Roman (Wethersfield HS, Kewanee) won two events. She cleared 5-5 to win the High Jump. She also won the 300 Hurdles (47.95).


Pana Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Defending 1A team champion Moweaqua Central A&M won the team championship scoring 101 points. They were only five points ahead of runner-up Decatur St. Teresa.

 

  • Amanda McClain (Sullivan) won three events. She won the Long Jump (16-11 ½), 400 Meter Dash (58.43), and the 200 Meter Dash (26.31).

 

  • Petersburg PORTA won the 4 x 800 meter relay (10:01.78) led by Adrienne and Maria Brauer. Both sisters won individual events. Adrienne won the 3200 (11:17.20), then came back to finish second behind her sister Maria in the 1600. St. Teresa will not defend their title in the 4x8 relay. They did not enter a team in the sectional meet.

 

Paxton-Buckley-Loda Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Gibson City-Melvin Sibley captured the team title with 99 points. The team to watch in this sectional is second place Clifton Central. They qualified 9 including 3 relays to Charleston.

 

  • Miranda Marry (Fisher HS) could push her team to a trophy at state. The senior won the 100 (12.68), 300 Hurdles (47.00), and the 200 Meter Dash (26.98).

 

Staunton Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Gillepsie won the sectional team championship scoring 99 points. Carlinville was second with 66 points.

 

  • Kayli Morris (Gillespie HS) was the meet’s only double winner. She captured both the High Jump (5-4) and the Long Jump (16-1 ½).

 

Tremont Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Host Tremont held on for the team championship scoring 96 1/3 points. Eureka was second with 91. Williamsville third with 89 1/3.

 

  • Tremont could be a threat for the team championships. They qualified 8 to state including 7 individuals. Amelia Glueck will be a threat to win three events. On Thursday evening, she won the Long Jump (18- ½), 100 (12.45), and 200 (26.14). Williamsville qualified 9 including 3 individual events by Rachel Rhodes.

 

  • Cassie Mundekis (Midwest Central HS, Manito) is on track to repeat her 800 title. She easily won the event (2:15.34) by more than six seconds Thursday night.


Friday May 16

 

Beardstown Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Carthage Illini West won the sectional team championship with 147 points. They qualified 12 to Charleston. Their three relays (4x1, 4x2, and 4x4) are in position to win each of those events. Pleasant Plains finished second with 105 points.

 

  • Paige Bray (Illini West HS, Carthage) will be part of her team’s two relays. She also qualified for Charleston winning the 100 Meter Dash (13.28) and 200 Meter Dash (26.91).

 

  • Rachel Clowers will be a favorite in both of the weight events in Charleston. She won the Shot Put (39-4) by more than five feet in this meet. She came back to win the Discus (129-8) winning by over 25 feet.

 

Byron Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Byron swept all four relays in winning their own sectional with 126 ½ points. Oregon finished second with 111 points.

 

  • Kelsey Hildreth (Byron HS) ran the fastest time in the state regardless of classification Friday night in the 3200 Meter Run. Her time of 10:32.02 was close to two minutes ahead of second place Emma Fenelon (Lutheran HS, Rockford). Hildreth came back to win the 1600 Meter Run (5:26.84) again ahead of Fenelon.

 

  • Oregon had two double event winners. Shannon Cullen won the Shot Put (39-0) and the Discus (120-2). Cydney Long won the 100 Hurdles (15.48) almost a second ahead of Kylee Knox (Harvest Christian Academy, Elgin). Long came back to win by a half a second ahead of Knox in the 300 Hurdles (48.28 – 48.78).


Carterville Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Led by the four individual wins by sophomore Madison Meyer, Carterville won the team title scoring 152 ½ points. Meyer won the Long Jump (18-1), the 100 (12.68), 200 (26.31), and 400 Meter Dash (58.31). Carterville also received wins by Aurora Breeden in the 800 Meter Run (2:27.15) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:41.47).

 

Chester Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Chester qualified 12 including all four relays in winning their sectional with 135 points. Belleville Althoff finished second scoring 66 points.

 

  • Keri Burmeister (Red Bud HS) was the meet’s only two event winner. The sophomore won the 3200 (11:32.49), then came back to win the 1600 (5:30.44)


Knoxville Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Taylor Ridge Rockridge won the team sectional title scoring 83 points. They were 18 points ahead of Aledo Mercer County. Devin Hasson led Rockridge win individual wins in the 100 Hurdles (16.55) and the 300 Hurdles (47.88).

 

  • Elmwood-Brimfield’s Hannah Gatley won the 100 Meter Dash (12.85) and 200 Meter Dash (26.89). Megan Reed (Cambridge HS) won the 400 Meter Dash (1:01.22) as well as the Triple Jump (34-4 ¾). Freshman Ryan Block (Knoxville HS) had a double win in the 3200 Meter Run (11:57.97) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:40.44).


Lisle Sectional (at Benedictine University)

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Aurora Christian was in charge of the team competition. They qualified all 4 relays along with 7 individuals to win the sectional team title with 132 points. North Shore Country Day finished second with 76 points.

 

  • 2013 2 time champion Peyton Wade (Aurora Christian HS) won both the High Jump (5-2) and 100 Hurdles (15.64). Wade also qualified in the Long Jump as well as being a part of the winning 4 x 200 squad for Aurora Christian.

 

  • Nichyria Byrd (Ogden International, Chicago) won both the Long Jump (17-3 ½) and the Triple Jump (36-4 ¼). Ariel Schumaker (Luther North HS, Chicago) was on top in both the Shot Put (36-3) and the Discus (117-2). Rory Kelly (North Shore Country Day, Winnetka) won the 3200 Meter Run (11:39.00) then came back to win a close 1600 (5:23.82) ahead of Westmont’s Maggie Arndt (5:24.38).


Seneca Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

  • Seneca easily won their own sectional scoring 181 points. They qualified 15 individuals and 3 relays to next week’s state meet. Willow Steudemann won the 100 (12.61), 200 (26.16), and 400 Meter Dash (59.42).

 

  • Morgan Zacharias (Reed Custer HS, Braidwood) still remains the favorite to capture the 1A Pole Vault. She won Friday’s competition clearing 12-3. Lexi Wilkinson (Seneca HS) was a double winner in the 100 Hurdles (17.41) and the Triple Jump (35-4 ¼).

 

  • Freshman Daly Galloway ran a personal best 11:11.56 to win the 3200 Meter Run two seconds ahead of Danielle Aurit (Marquette HS, Ottawa). Galloway and Aurit again finished 1-2 in the 1600 Meter Run. Galloway’s winning time of 5:21.32 was over a second ahead of Aurit (5:22.61).

 

St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional

IHSA Qualifiers

 

Highlights

Host St. Joseph-Ogden edged Tolono Unity 85-82 to win the sectional team title.

 

Tolono Unity won the 4x8 relay displaying that they will be the team to beat in this event. Unity ran a 1A state best 9:51.99 to win the event by almost 17 seconds ahead of St. Thomas More.

 

Mary Bass (Henning HS, Bismarck) qualified in two events winning the 100 Meter Dash (12.64) and 200 Meter Dash (26.01). Jenny Kimbro (Jamaica HS, Sidell) headed for a showdown with Peyton Wade winning the 100 Hurdles (15.36). She came back to win the 300 Hurdles (45.66). Abby Nicholson (Jamaica HS, Sidell) won both the Shot Put (37-11) and the Discus (117-10)
